Profibus (Process Field Bus) is a standard for fieldbus communication in automation technology and is widely used in industrial settings. It utilizes multiple types of cabling for communication, primarily twisted pair cabling and fiber optics.

Twisted pair cables are commonly used in different Profibus variants, especially Profibus DP (Decentralized Periphery), for connecting devices in a control system. This type of cabling is beneficial for its ability to reject electromagnetic interference, which is crucial in industrial environments where heavy machinery can produce significant noise.

Additionally, fiber optics may be utilized in Profibus applications as well, particularly in systems that require longer distances between devices or when it is necessary to ensure high-speed data transmission over substantial stretches without interference from electromagnetic sources.

Choosing twisted pair cabling and fiber optics as the communication medium acknowledges the flexibility, robustness, and necessary performance requirements of industrial communication standards like Profibus, making it an appropriate answer for the question regarding the type of cabling utilized.
